A family preparing for a power outage during amn extreme weather event

Power Outage Plan education and awareness campaign

Our Power Outage Plan campaign, developed as part of The Energy Charter’s #BetterTogether Community Energy  Resilience initiative, equips Australians with the knowledge and tools to prepare for unexpected power outages, particularly during extreme weather events.

With increasing climate-related challenges, being prepared isn’t just smart—it’s essential for community energy resilience.

We’re encouraging all Australians to complete a Power Outage Plan at www.poweroutageplan.com.au

Watch the video below to find out how to create your plan:

Our simple, actionable “CHECK. PLAN. DO.” framework helps households know exactly what steps to take before a power outage. This community-developed approach focuses on practical solutions that protect well-being and reduce stress during disruptive events.

The campaign complements our Life Support Power Outage Plan awareness and education campaign, addressing broader community needs while recognising that energy resilience is everyone’s concern.

By making preparation straightforward, we’re building stronger, more energy resilient communities across Australia.

Who is this campaign for?

  • General public (all Australians)
  • Communities in disaster-prone regions
  • People experiencing vulnerability
  • Emergency services and community organisations

Outcomes and milestones

🔌 Power Outage Plan
We worked with communities and energy businesses to develop and launch www.poweroutageplan.com.au as a central resource hub for Australians seeking practical guidance on preparing for power outages, offering downloadable planning tools.

Working with our collaborators in community, business and government we launched a public awareness initiative through multiple channels to ensure all Australians know how to prepare for power outages before they occur, rather than reacting afterward.

💡Community-developed framework
Informed by people with lived experience, we created a simple, memorable “CHECK. PLAN. DO.” framework making emergency preparation accessible to all Australians regardless of background.

🔌 Cross-sector collaboration
We brought together community organisations, energy providers, emergency services and local governments, and to create a consistent, authoritative approach to power outage preparedness.

💡Community energy resilience targeting
We’ve tailored resources and outreach strategies for diverse communities, ensuring materials are relevant for urban apartments, rural properties, and everything in between.
